The community now known as Kemah was established on a Texas and New Orleans railroad and SH 146. In the late 1800’s, Kemah was known as “Evergreen” or locally “Shell Siding”. In 1907, the name was changed to Kemah because Evergreen was already an established city. Kemah is derived from an Indian word meaning “wind in your face” because of the location on Galveston bay.
Kemah is now largely known for the Kemah Boardwalk, which is now one of the premier attractions in Houston area. The Boardwalk offers restaurants, an amusement park with numerous rides and games for all ages all while right on the beautiful waters of Galveston Bay. Kemah is also known for boating and fishing because of their location on Galveston Bay. One advantage of living in Kemah is that it is a very small town of only 2,000 people. Area Vibes rated Kemah an A+ on their school systems.
