The San Leon - Bacliff area has a deep and rich history in Galveston County. Early on, Bacliff served as a weekend resort and San Leon an industrial town. Bacliff was originally Clifton By the Sea and San Leon was North Galveston. In the 1800’s, cattle were driven across Redfish bar to a tannery in San Leon. North Galveston became an industrial town in the late 1800’s with numerous factories built in the area. At one time, there was a 75 room hotel that catered to boaters and wealthy families. The San Leon train station helped bring people from Houston and Galveston.
Today, the San Leon and Bacliff area is still a fishing and boating community. There are numerous shrimpers and oyster companies operating along the waterfront. Some homesites along Bayshore offer very high elevation with many custom homes being built over the years. Topwater Grill and Gilhooleys are popular restaurants for locals. Bayshore Park offers public access to the waterfront.
